Eastbourne is a famous town and lies on the seaside on England's south coast, about 110 km from London. With a population of around 100,000, it is the second largest city in Sussex. It lies at the eastern end of the South Downs range of chalk cliffs and hills, its most notable feature being Beachy Head, the highest chalk cliff in southern England. To the east, it is bounded by the Pevensey Level and beyond by the low-lying floodplain. It has one of the sunniest days of the year in the UK, and its climate is noted for its relatively high levels of sunshine, making the city claim to be 'the sunniest place in Britain'. The average age in Ward 1 is 71.1! However, most of the population is young, and even if you visit, you probably won't see many elderly people. It should become widespread. One of the city's attractions is its largely undeveloped seaside which lacks the entertainment and rowdy activities associated with Brighton. Brighton is its big, bold cousin to the west. Eastbourne's facade remains largely a Victorian hotel, as much of Eastbourne has traditionally been owned by the Duke of Devonshire, who has retained the rights to these buildings and refused to convert them into shops. . Built in 1935, the beautiful amphitheatre has been preserved and hosts traditional concerts by the seaside daily during the holiday season. The relatively calm atmosphere is uninterrupted by the city's biggest event, the 'Airborne', until mid-August.
