Haringey, the inner borough of London, England, is part of Middlesex's historic county. It is

  • north of Islington and Hackney
  • South of Enfield.

1965 Haringey was formed by merging various boroughs of Haringey, Harringay, and Hornsey. The name was derived from the medieval place-name Haringey (1201) or Haringesheye (1243), which means "Enclosure in the Gray Wood" which is about an earlier Saxon settlement in the Middlesex forest. The area became Hornsey's immense parish and manor in the Middle Ages. Although primarily residential, Haringey has varied industries (mainly in Tottenham), including light engineering and manufacturing metal goods and confectioneries. Wood Green is the centre for shopping and services in the central administrative part of the borough.  The surrounding park - Alexandra Palace, was built in the late 19th century as an art and entertainment complex, It became the original home of British Broadcasting Television in 1936. After a fire in 1980, it got restored to serve as an exhibition and conference centre.
