St Helens is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Merseyside, England. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the eastern bank of the River Mersey, opposite the city of Liverpool, and has a population of 74,586 as of the 2011 census. The town had a population of 145,641 at the 2011 Census. St Helens is the largest town in the metropolitan borough and the third largest in Merseyside.

St Helens is thought to have been founded by the Anglo-Saxons around the 6th century, and was originally called "Selin". However, the precise date of the town's foundation is unknown. It is believed that the town's name is derived from the Celtic saint Helen, or "Helen of the Hill", who is said to have founded a monastery here in the 4th century AD.
