Sunderland is a port city in the north of England. It is the administrative center of the City of Sunderland, within the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County, historic Durham County and the Northeast Combined Government area. The town is 10 miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is located at the mouth of the River Wear, which empties into the North Sea. The river also flows through the city of Durham about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of the city centre.

The town's inhabitants are sometimes called Mackems. The term originated in the early 1980s; Usage and acceptance by residents, especially among older generations, are not common. At one point, ships built on Wear were called "Jamies", unlike ships on the Tyne, which were called "Geordies", although in the case of "Jamie", it is unclear whether this Will it ever be open to everyone? .

There were three original settlements at the mouth of the river that are part of the modern city:

Monkwearmouth, settled in 674 on the north bank of the river with King Ecgfrith of Northumbria granting land to Benedict Biscop to establish a monastery, which, together with Jarrow Priory, would later form the double monastery of Monkwearmouth-Jarrow; Sunderland, settled in 685; and Bishopwearmouth, founded in 930. The latter two are located on the south bank of Wear. The second settlement on the mouth of the Usury River developed as a fishing settlement and later a port, gaining town charter in 1179. The city began trading in coal and salt with ships that began to be built on the river in the 14th century. In the 19th century, with population growth due to shipbuilding, ports and docks, the city received two other settlements. Following the decline of traditional industries at the end of the 20th century, the area became a center for automotive manufacturing, science and technology, and the service sector. In 1992, the county of Sunderland was recognized as a city.
