Job Description

Employment Type:
Full time

Job Description:

Barnardo's is seeking to recruit an experienced, caring and committed Children's Residential Social Worker to join our team.  The Children's Residential Social Worker within Summerfield provides and models excellent practice in direct care, and will support, guide, and nurture the staff team to provide the highest level of care to the children in our service.  This role is also central to robust care planning and assessment within the service, and in building and maintaining relationships with our colleagues in Children's Social Care.

The Service:  Summerfield is a nurturing, caring, and safe home for six children and young people aged between 5 and 18 years.  We support them to grow and learn and to develop their skills, confidence, and independence.  The children living at Summerfield have different learning, physical and emotional needs.  Some children have high level complex needs, including health and social needs and behaviours that can challenge.  Our vision is to build happy and healthy childhoods and support every child to thrive.

The service is staffed 24 hours per day by a dedicated team working on a shift basis.  The children and young people can live with us until they move into adult accommodation, and therefore it is essential that Summerfield feels like home.

The role:  As a Children's Residential Social Worker, you will work closely with the Registered Manager and team managers to devise and maintain care plans and strategies around each child, and support all the children to live fun, healthy, and active lives.  To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have a range of skills and abilities relating to the care of children and young people.
  • Enjoy the challenges and rewards of working with children and young people with additional needs.
  • Have recent social work experience, ideally in a residential or similar children's setting.
  • Have excellent care planning and assessment skills.
  • Share our commitment to providing a safe, nurturing, and trauma-informed home for the children and young people who live with us.
  • Have a sound knowledge of safeguarding.

The generic job description attached to the advert outlines some of the key responsibilities of the role, and the successful candidate(s) will also:

  • Develop positive and professional working relationships with each child to understand and communicate their needs through listening, conversations and using pictures.
  • Have an open and flexible approach to working with children and young people and a commitment to understanding how to positively manage behaviours that can challenge.
  • Take a lead in the development and implementation of robust care plans and strategies for children in our care.
  • Be a lead point of contact with key partner agencies, ensuring consistent communication and participation in meetings relating to individual children.
  • Oversee regular updates to each child's allocated social worker, ensuring information is shared promptly and in the format(s) agreed.
  • Model and foster trauma-informed practice within the team.
  • Support the vision of the service and have the passion and drive to see it succeed.
  • To be a champion of and advocate for the voice of the child, building child-centred and trauma-informed practice into the heart of everything you do.
  • Safeguard the young people within the service - including reporting and responding to concerns and safeguarding disclosures and promptly reporting to managers.
  • Work with the Registered Manager to implement care plans and fully participate in shift handovers to make sure information and any concerns are shared.
  • Work with the Registered Manager and allocated social workers to ensure transitions into the service and onwards to foster or adult care are planned and effective.
  • Support, mentor, and guide other members of the team in developing their planning and assessment practice.
  • To complete general housekeeping and domestic tasks including cleaning, loading the washing machine, tidying children's rooms and clothes, to keep Summerfield safe, clean, and tidy.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work, and support others to do the same.
  • To explore the possibility to developing Social Work Student Placements within Summerfield and provide work-based supervision to students as required.

Qualification:  You will hold a current Social Work registration and ideally hold a level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (England) or equivalent level 3 qualification in health and social care, childcare, or similar.  If you are looking to develop your skills, willingness to complete a level 3 qualification whilst working at Summerfield will be required.

Training and development opportunities: All new employees have a planned induction, including Barnardo's core training and will receive training specific to the needs of the children and young people. The successful candidate(s) will receive monthly supervision with their line manager, an annual Performance & Development Review and be fully involved in Team Meetings.

Working hours:  Roles are usually offered on a full-time basis and will involve working an agreed pattern of shifts each week, including some weekends.  Hours and rota patterns will be discussed at interview.
