Charnwood is an administrative county in Leicestershire, England. Almost all counties belong to the classical county of Leicestershire, except a small area east of Wymeswold in Nottinghamshire. The county's name is derived from the Charnwood Forest, one of the ancient forests of the Midlands.
The county of Charnwood partly encompasses a group of hills northwest of Leicester, rising to 278 meters (912 ft) at Bardon Hill and exhibiting outcrops of some of the oldest subterranean rocks of Great Britain. It is a series of sandstone spread widely into the hills, forming rocky outcrops. Charnwood is quarried for construction materials and metal roads. Although significantly reduced, forest cover is still substantial, and the area serves as recreational and residential places for the people.
The town of Loughborough lies on the northeastern edge of Charnwood Hill and serves as the county's administrative centre. It is an industrial city with a modern university and a famous physical education college.
