Great Yarmouth, commonly known as Yarmouth, is a coastal town, district and the principal administrative centre of Great Yarmouth County in Norfolk, England; it lies in the middle of the River Yare and lies 20 miles east of Norwich. Its population of 38,693 at the 2011 census makes it the third most populous in Norfolk. Its fishing industry declined after the mid-20th century and has all but ceased to function. The North Sea oil of the 1960s provided the oil rig industry for offshore natural gas rigs; Recently, offshore wind energy and other renewable energy industries have emerged. Yarmouth has been a seaside resort since 1760 and is the gateway between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. Holidays increased when a railroad opened in 1844, providing more accessible and cheaper access to new settlements. Wellington Pier opened in 1854, and Britannia Pier in 1858. During the 20th century, Yarmouth boomed as a seaside resort, with a promenade, pub, tram, fish and chip shops fried, theatre, Pleasure Beach, Sea Life Centre, Hippodrome Circus, Time and Tide Museum and a Victorian glass and cast iron conservatory.
