Bromley, A borough of London, England, is on the southeastern perimeter of the capital. Most of the county is part of historic Kent, but its western extension historically belongs to Surrey. Bromley is the largest borough by area of ??boroughs in London. The present county of Bromley was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the former counties of Beckenham and Bromley and the inner-city counties of Orpington, Penge and parts of Chislehurst and Sidcup. The county includes Mottingham, Sydenham, Elmstead, Penge, Anerley, Chislehurst, Beckenham, Bromley, Elmers End, Shortlands, St. Paul's Cray, Bickley, Petts Wood, and Southborough. Bromley's first village charter dates back to AD 862. From the earliest times, the bishops of Rochester were lords of the manor; From Norman times until 1845, they resided at Bromley Palace, which was replaced by a new structure in 1775 and now houses a civic centre and town hall. In 1205, King John issued a rule for the market to be held on Tuesdays and further changed to Thursdays in 1477. Although the fairs were abolished in 1865, a market was still held. The Orpington Priory, possibly dating from 1270, is home to the Bromley Museum. Bromley Parish Church got destroyed in the Battle of Britain by German bombing in 1941 but was later re-engineered; it still retains its medieval tower. Nearby are the remains of the Roman villa at Crofton, inhabited from about 140 to 400 AD. Wickham Court, built in the Tudor style, is another notable structure. Bromley College, a charity founded in 1666 to provide a home for the widows of Anglican clergy in a multi-story red-brick building with wrought-iron gates. Camden Place, built in 1609, was the residence of Napoleon III and the exiled Empress Eugenie. A war memorial cross on Chislehurst Common is dedicated to the son, Louis Bonaparte, who was killed in the Zulu War. William Pitt the Elder stayed at Hayes Place, and William Pitt the Younger was born there in 1759. From 1842 until his death, naturalist Charles Darwin lived at Down House in the village of Downe, where he wrote Landmark On the Origin of Species.
