Newcastle upon tyne, or simply Newcastle, is a city and municipality in Tyne and Wear, England. The city lies on the north bank of the River Tyne and forms most of the built-up area of ??Tyneside. Newcastle is also the most populous city in the North East of England. Newcastle developed around a Roman settlement called Pons Aelius and the settlement later took its name from a castle built in 1080 by William the Conqueror's eldest son, Robert Curthose.
Historically, the city's economy has depended on its port and in particular its status as one of the world's largest shipbuilding and repair centers. Today, the city's economy is very diverse with the main economic outputs being science, finance, retail, education, tourism and nightlife.
