Newcastle upon tyne, or simply Newcastle, is a city and municipality in Tyne and Wear, England. The city lies on the north bank of the River Tyne and forms most of the built-up area of ??Tyneside. Newcastle is also the most populous city in the North East of England. Newcastle developed around a Roman settlement called Pons Aelius and the settlement later took its name from a castle built in 1080 by William the Conqueror's eldest son, Robert Curthose.
